This is a new blog page devoted to Wolves. History, Myths, and current unjust treatment will be discussed. Solutions to these injustices will be suggested. This is both educational and a personal matter of the heart. As these wild creatures are scapegoated and hunted unnecessarily, my heart screams in pain for the loss. Hopefully this information will touch others hearts and spur us all to action. www.wolfeducation.org/ www.predatordefense.org/wolves.htm www.nmwild.org/our-work/wilderness-defense/mexican-gray-wolves mainewolfcoalition.org/ www.howlingforwolves.org/ A simple way to send your disapproval is to use your consumer power. If you think that doesn't work take a look at the variety of "organic" and "all natural foods" available today versus twenty years ago. Even five years ago. We have power as consumers! Most of us cannot impact government policy or create change quickly enough to be affective but we can "put our money where our mouth is!" This is very effective. It will require discipline and some sacrifice but you will be saving lives and sending a powerful message to those who have the power to change policy in our country.
Here it is. One simple way you can save the lives of wolves all over the country. STOP EATING BEEF AND BISON. Ranchers affect political policy! They have power! Ranchers are behind the recent deregulation of the endangered species act for wolves. Yes, wolves are carnivores and they do kill a small number of cattle each year. So do cougars and bear. Yes, wolves are adept hunters and will take down a lone or vulnerable animal if hungry. Look at the statistics. I will add a link from my state of Washington to give you an idea of the damage they do. It is small in comparison to the cost of loosing this animal. The government already spends more on staff and supplies to kill these animals then it would cost to use other methods of deterrent. It would cost less to replace the cattle for the offended rancher. Lost cattle is a tax deduction! Ranchers have other options and there are ranchers who use alternative methods of deterring prey. wdfw.wa.gov/conservation/gray_wolf/packs/7/ If you must eat red meat please inquire as to the source. Hunted game, accept from Alaska, is a healthy alternative. There are ranchers who practice alternative methods of prey deterrent. You will pay more for your meat but you will be putting your money to good use. Alaska recently passed a bill allowing wolves and grizzley bears to be killed during denning season when they are nursing pups. This is animal genocide. Those of us who see the immorality of the culture of human greed must take a strong stand with our dollar. Alaska's primary reason for doing this is revenue from hunting season. Hunt elsewhere! Let's stop telling Goldie Locks stories. Irrational fear started with some of our European ancestors. Finland still struggles with this irrational fear. www.theguardian.com/world/2017/feb/25/europe-wolf-population-finland-culling-protection The human belief that we and our pets should be safe in rural environments at all times is unrealistic. This is not a new problem. The american west is not alone in their disdain for wolves. Read this article and get a look at the thoughts and concerns of a european culture. I love all animals. I am protective of dogs in my care. We have to accept the dangers to animals in rural areas and take measures to protect them. Wolves have a right to be here to. If they try to attack you or your pet on your property, be prepared to shoot it as you would any predator. Rural life has always had risks. Are we willing to make sacrifices for the wild beauty of nature? We will continue to ask this question as long as we coexist.
